How to Mass Delete Emails on Gmail: Clear Thousands at Once

The web inbox shows 50 messages per page by default and gives you no obvious “remove everything” button, which is why a 60,000-message inbox feels impossible to clear. It is not - there is a select-all that most people never notice. Here is how to mass delete emails on Gmail properly, including the searches worth running and the step that actually frees up storage.

How to mass delete emails on Gmail: select all conversations that match

This is how to delete more than 50 emails in Gmail - or 50,000 - and it works in any desktop browser.

  1. Type a search into the search bar, for example category:promotions.
  2. Tick the checkbox above the message list on the left. That selects the 50 messages on the current page.
  3. A line appears above the list: All 50 conversations on this page are selected. Next to it is the Gmail Select all conversations that match this search link - click it.
  4. Click the trash icon.
  5. Confirm the dialog that appears.

Every matching message now goes to Trash - 200 or 200,000 - not just the page. Large batches process in the background and the count in the sidebar drops over the following minutes.

To reduce clicking further, raise the page size: Settings → See all settings → General → Maximum page size → 100 conversations per page. That also helps when you only want to know how to delete multiple emails in Gmail by hand, ticking a handful of rows on one page.

Searches worth clearing in bulk

The select-all is only as good as the search you run first. These are the highest-yield ones, safest first:

SearchWhat it clears
category:promotions older_than:1yPromotional emails more than a year old
category:social older_than:6mOld notifications from social networks
from:noreply older_than:1yAutomated mail nobody replies to
larger:10M older_than:2yThe heavy attachments eating your quota
is:unread category:promotionsPromotions you never even opened
has:attachment larger:5M older_than:1yOld files you already have elsewhere

Always read the result count before you act, and skim the first page. If you are working out how to delete old emails in Gmail without touching recent mail, older_than is the filter to lean on: it accepts d, m and y, while larger: filters by size. The full reference is in our Gmail search operators guide.

How to delete all unread emails in Gmail

Search is:unread on its own, then use the same select-all. Adding older_than:3m is a sensible guard - it keeps unread mail that arrived recently and might still need an answer. Unread counts in the thousands are almost always newsletters, so this one search often clears more than any other.

For a single sender the manual route is simple: search from:sender@example.com, select all, trash. That is how to delete all emails from one sender on Gmail. The problem is scale - searching, checking, selecting and trashing takes about a minute per sender. With 80 newsletters in your history, that is an hour and twenty minutes of the same four clicks.

Working sender by sender is what bulk tools are for. Mass Unsubscribe Gmail scans the mailbox once, groups every message by sender with a count next to each, and lets you tick 30 senders and delete all of their mail in a single action - then unsubscribe from those same senders so the mail does not come back.

Delete by sender, not by search

See every sender in your mailbox ranked by how much mail they sent you, then delete and unsubscribe in the same pass.

Empty the Trash or nothing is freed

This is the step that catches everyone. Trashed messages sit in Trash for 30 days and continue to count against your 15 GB.

  1. Open Trash in the left sidebar (click More if you cannot see it).
  2. Click Empty Trash now.
  3. Do the same in Spam - it has its own 30-day holding period.

Google’s storage figures also update on a delay. If the number has not moved after emptying the Trash, give it a few hours before troubleshooting; see Gmail storage full for the rest of the checklist.

How to delete all emails on Gmail at once

If you want the mailbox genuinely empty - a new start, or an account you are retiring - this is how to delete all Gmail emails at once. The process is the same with a broader search:

  1. Search in:anywhere to include archived mail, Spam and Trash, or leave the search empty and open the All Mail label.
  2. Tick the checkbox above the list, then click Select all conversations that match this search.
  3. Trash, confirm, and wait - a mailbox with six figures of messages takes several minutes to process.
  4. Empty Trash to make it permanent.

Two warnings. in:anywhere includes your Sent mail, so exclude it with in:anywhere -in:sent if you want to keep what you wrote. And a full wipe is irreversible after 30 days - export first via Google Takeout if there is any chance you will want the archive.

Archived mail has no folder of its own, which is why people get stuck on how to delete archived emails in Gmail. Search -in:inbox -in:sent and what remains is mostly mail you archived at some point; select all and trash it the same way.

How to delete multiple emails in Gmail on phone and tablet

The mobile apps have no select-all-matching option. You can only tick messages individually, which is unusable at scale. Two workarounds:

  • Switch to a desktop browser and use the method above - this is the practical answer.
  • On mobile, open mail.google.com in Chrome and request the desktop site. It works, but the checkboxes are small.

What not to throw away

Bulk removal is fast enough to cause damage. Keep these:

  • Receipts, invoices and tax records. Search invoice OR receipt before running a wide purge and label them.
  • Account recovery and 2FA mail. Password reset trails can matter later.
  • Anything in Sent. A broad older_than:2y purge on All Mail takes your own sent messages with it.
  • Legal or HR correspondence. Obvious, easy to lose in a purge.

A safe habit: archive first, trash after. Archived mail leaves the inbox but stays searchable - though it still uses storage, so it is not a fix for a full account.

A 15-minute routine that clears most inboxes

If you want the short version of how to quickly delete emails in Gmail, run these in order:

  1. category:promotions older_than:1y → select all → trash.
  2. category:social older_than:6m → select all → remove.
  3. larger:10M older_than:2y → skim the list → remove what you no longer need.
  4. is:unread category:promotions → select all → trash.
  5. Empty Trash and Spam.
  6. Run a sender scan and unsubscribe from the top offenders so the same mail does not return.

Most accounts drop several gigabytes and tens of thousands of messages in that quarter of an hour. Knowing how to delete emails in Gmail at this scale solves the backlog; the unsubscribe pass in step 6 is what stops you doing it again next year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get past the 50-message page when deleting?

Tick the checkbox above the message list to select the visible page, then click the link that says 'Select all conversations that match this search'. That extends the action to every matching message, not only the 50 or 100 shown on screen.

Is there a way to delete all emails in Gmail and start over?

Yes. Open All Mail (or search in:anywhere), tick the checkbox, choose 'Select all conversations that match this search', remove everything, then empty the Trash. Export anything you want to keep with Google Takeout first.

Is there a way to mass delete emails in Gmail on a phone?

Not in the mobile apps - they only let you tick messages one at a time. Switch to a desktop browser, or request the desktop site in a mobile browser, to get the select-all option.

Does removing emails free up Google storage?

Only after you empty the Trash. Trashed messages stay there for 30 days and keep using your quota until then. Open Trash and choose 'Empty Trash now' to reclaim the space immediately.

Can I recover emails I removed in bulk?

Yes, within 30 days, from the Trash folder - select the messages and choose Move to Inbox. After 30 days, or after you empty the Trash manually, the messages are gone permanently.
